Lace Works
A.LaB’s lace paintings began as an experiment: could acrylic paint hold on something as delicate, sheer, and patterned as lace? Unlike glass, lace does not simply reveal the wall behind it. Its own texture and ornament become part of the image, allowing the background pattern, painted subject, and surrounding space to interact as a single composition. The lace itself is thrifted fabric, reflecting A.LaB’s longstanding instinct to work resourcefully, repurpose existing materials, and find creative possibilities in objects that might otherwise be overlooked. Some works are playful studies created for the joy of seeing how far the material could be pushed, while others, including the regal pet portraits, were made as deeply personal gifts celebrating beloved animals. Together, the series explores transparency, texture, and the idea that the surface itself can become part of the story rather than just a place to put the paint.
